Exposure hierarchy: An exposure hierarchy is a list of anxiety-provoking situations or triggers arranged in a hierarchical order from least distressing to most distressing. Exposure exercises: In ERP, individuals are systematically exposed to their triggers without engaging in compulsive behaviours. Response prevention: During exposure, individuals are actively discouraged from engaging in their usual compulsive behaviours. This step is essential to break the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. By preventing the usual response, individuals learn that their anxiety naturally decreases over time, and the feared consequences do not occur.
Habituation and learning: With repeated exposure and response prevention, individuals experience habituation, which means that their anxiety diminishes over time. This process helps them realize that their fears are unfounded and that they can tolerate anxiety without resorting to compulsive behaviours. Through this learning, new neural pathways are established, leading to healthier responses to triggers.
